I believe fasting is essential and not at all optional for effective Christian living. I believe God is calling all His children to make fasting a regular and consistent part of their devotion and service to Him. While fasting is impactful whenever it is done correctly, I see a lifestyle of fasting as a key strategy for this time. It is not something for some Christians, deep Christians, or Christians in trouble. Fasting is for all Christians, and fasting is for now.

Fasting separates us from the influences of the world and distractions of the flesh and helps us to hear God more clearly. Fasting is a sign we trust and rely on God who is Spirit more than on the natural world within which we exist temporarily.

Only God is all-knowing, so we should expect to always be learning and growing in wisdom, knowledge and understanding. In fact, the Bible tells us to be intentional about seeking these out.

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding (Proverbs 3:13 ESV)

Without sufficient knowledge and understanding of fasting, many will not fast. Others are familiar with fasting but a community could help them fast regularly, complete fasts, fast for longer periods, or fast more strictly. Understanding God's Word (testimonies) leads us to act on them and this brings God's life into our lives.

Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live. (Psalm 119:144 ESV)

We can gain wisdom, knowledge and understanding through experience, but also by asking questions. Consider how young children ask lots of questions as an essential part of their development. Aren't we supposed to be like little children to inherit the kingdom of heaven? (See Matthew 18:3; 19:4).

Some Questions About Fasting

As I continue to write about fasting and recommend books on fasting I would like to know what you want to know about fasting. My goal is to create content and resources to support us in becoming God's "Fasting Army". It would help me to do this if could ask you some questions.

It is not enough to know what the Bible says, we need to increase our understanding. Understanding leads to obedience to and observance of the Word of God. What if the only thing stopping you from fasting or desiring to fast was a lack of understanding?

Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. (Psalm 119:34 ESV)

As I work behind the scenes creating resources to equip and inspire Christians to fast with understanding, I thought I would ask you questions about your knowledge and experience of fasting. I have created a survey to gather anonymous information and hopefully also prompt you to reflect on Biblical fasting.

7 Day Fasting Journal

To thank you for completing and sharing my fasting survey I am giving away my 7-Day Fasting Journal containing Scripture, prayer starters and reflections on fasting. You do not have to fast for 7 consecutive days to use it. It is flexible and can be used for a series of one-day fasts or when skipping a meal. If you are not quite ready to begin fasting, this Fasting Journal could be the inspiration you need. It is a digital resource so you can use and reuse it.

Simply complete the survey for access to the free 7-Day Fasting Journal. Please also share the survey with at least 3 other people or groups.

The direct link to the survey is here. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code:

Blessing in Action: Questions About Fasting

What questions do you have about fasting? What would you like to know? As you complete the survey, why not think about your understanding and application of what the Bible says about fasting? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you more about the strategic power of fasting.
