15 Inspirational Prayer Prompts with Bible Verses to Ignite Your Passion for Prayer

Prayer offers a unique opportunity to connect with God, reflect on your journey, and seek guidance. I love to Write the Scriptures. Writing your prayers is also a valuable practice. It provides a powerful way to deepen your faith, organise your thoughts, and carve out a space for meaningful reflection. If you desire increased focus during your prayer time, using prompts when writing your prayers can help.

Below are 15 inspirational prayer prompts, each paired with Scripture to help enhance your prayer life.

What are Prayer Prompts

Prayer prompts are phrases, themes, or questions designed to inspire or guide a person in prayer. They serve as starting points to help believers focus their thoughts and express their prayers to God, especially when they struggle with knowing what to say. Prayer prompts can be used for verbal or written prayers and are often used in prayer journaling.

Prayer prompts are versatile tools that help Christians deepen their prayer life, encourage intentionality, and foster a more meaningful connection with God.

The Benefits of Writing Prayers

Writing your prayers can significantly enrich your spiritual life. Documenting your prayers allows you to track your spiritual growth, communicate your needs, and identify God’s answers over time. The practice strengthens your relationship with God and helps clarify God's purpose and direction.

Innumerable people have found comfort, insight and inspiration from reading prayers recorded in writing throughout the Bible. That is part of the reason they are there. Take the prayer of Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4, for example. We are introduced to Jabez in verse 9 and his prayer in verse 10, yet much has been written, preached and recorded about his prayer. Whilst the Psalms were written to be sung, we can read them today as prayers. Many have found revelation about God and learnt more about prayer by praying through one of the 150 Psalms each day.

Our own written prayers may never be read by others but we can still encourage ourselves in the Lord as we reread them. It is a faith-building experience to review our prayers, bring them before the Lord again and acknowledge when they are answered or God is moving on our behalf.

How to Make the Most of These Prompts

As you use these prayer prompts you may discover insights about your life, relationships, and aspirations that you hadn’t considered before. Start by selecting prompts that resonate with you. Schedule some peaceful moments for reflection and let the Holy Spirit lead your thoughts. Remember that you can also use these prompts spontaneously. They are here when you struggle to know what to pray about or want to try something different.

Tip #1: Set aside a dedicated time each week to revisit previous prompts. Reviewing your prayers will help you notice how your thoughts and feelings evolve over time. It also reveals God's presence in your life and the areas you are praying about.

Tip #2: You can use each prompt over and over again so date your prayers and compare your prayers and God's answers across times and seasons.

My Prayer Cards

Use My Prayer Cards to enhance this practice. I have filled many notebooks and journals with prayers and faith-based reflections. However, My Prayer Cards are easier to review. They are pretty, portable and powerful. They push me to be specific and concise in my prayers. Through them, I am building a meaningful record of my walk with God.

Here's how you could use My Prayer Cards with prayer prompts:

  • Meditate on the Scripture inviting the Holy Spirit to give you insight

  • Write your prayer on the card and prayerfully reflect on what you have written

  • Alternatively, you can pray as you usually would and then summarise your prayer on the card.

  • Optional: Write the verse associated with the prayer prompt as it appears in your Bible or as a prayer or declaration

  • When you are done, store the prayer card in the box to pray over or review later

In time, you will have a collection of prayers to return to in similar situations in the future whilst remembering the impact of the first time you prayed it.
